Saying reading makes you a better writer, in my opinion, is true. Reading improves the word choice of writers. It can also help writers makes their writing flow in a more effective way. However, I don’t think that it works the other way around. Writing doesn’t improve one’s reading ability. When reading, you're reading the ideas of others, and can then use those ideas to help your writing. Writing doesn't improve reading because the words are already there. Writing doesn't give you the ability to change what you're reading.
I do think reading and writing have a 50/50 relationship because they both have just about the same amount of benefits. Reading allows people to hear the ideas and opinions of others which help them expand their views. Reading can help people write and speak better by improving their word choice and how they phrase their sentences.
Writing has its advantages as well. Writing allows people to put their own ideas on paper for others to see. Writers can be informative, persuasive, or entertaining. There is so much freedom in writing that it allows writers to express whatever they may want to share. Reading and writing have different purposes, but without writing, we couldn't read, and without reading, we couldn't write.
My reading has impacted my writing because viewing the writing of others helps my own writing. When I read other people’s works, I take away new concepts that I can use in my own writing. Reading also improves my word choice because I see how other authors utilize certain words to make them have more impact. Writing doesn't effect my reading as much, but it does help me understand the purpose of other author’s pieces. Both reading and writing are important in expanding the horizons of society. They both present us with new concepts and ideas that can impact the certain groups in society or society as a whole.
